Manuel Carvalho, a writer and editor from Montreal, has been collecting the contribution of Portuguese writers in Canada for over twenty years. His work has culminated in an important publication of over 120 Luso-Canadian writers, Antologia Literária Satúrnia – Autores Luso-Canadianos.
The anthology of over 400 pages, a significant addition to the documentation of the canon of the Portuguese diaspora in Canada, is primarily in Portuguese, with a few texts in English and French. The selection criteria for inclusion in the anthology was that a writer be already published in book form. However, Manuel Carvalho made a couple of exceptions and included two texts from writers not yet published. I am overjoyed to be one of them.
I am extremely honoured and delighted that he chose my English written essay, Being Through Words, originally posted on my blog, as one of the exceptions made. I am very proud to be included in this collection (page 379) and offer my heartfelt obrigado to Manuel Carvalho.
Making the anthology available to readers during a pandemic has proven a great difficulty. However, despite no official book launch dates, copies were distributed to those who attended the Toronto launch for Avós: Raízes e Nós this past September.
The anthology is currently available for download on PDF and I encourage all those who can read in Portuguese to have a look at this collection which gathers a wide variety of Portuguese writers in the diaspora who, despite living far from their geographical roots, continue to write in Portuguese but also in the languages of acolhimento, the official bi-lingual languages that welcomed us into the Canadian social landscape.

Imagino o quanto seja importante para você não perder os laços afetivos com sua terra de origem.
Eu li o seu texto Being Through Words e gostei muito. Confesso que meu inglês é bem básico, na verdade se tornou bem básico, mas isto já é outra história… Mas o que eu quero dizer é que li seu texto com a ajuda de um tradutor. Espero que não se importe.
Acho engraçada essa ligação do português com o inglês.Não sei se isso é coisa da minha imaginação, mas me parece que há sim uma ligação entre português e inglês. Gosto de pensar como exemplo disso Fernando Pessoa que falavam eximiamente os dois idiomas!
Melhor dizendo, acho que os falantes da língua portuguesa, como brasileiros e portugueses, sentem um fascínio pela língua inglesa. Ou talvez isso seja uma opinião apenas minha… ??? Não sei…

Olá Alex,
Fico muito agradecido por teres lido o meu texto. Geralmente escrevo em inglês, mas de vez em quando gosto de usar as palavras portuguesas, e, então vais encontrar palavras portuguesas misturadas com as palavras inglesas nalgumas das minhas escritas.
A relação entre o português e o inglês já vem dos longos séculos entre Portugal e a Inglaterra, por isso não estranho a fascinação pelo inglês. No meu caso, vim para o Canadá quando tinha nove anos e comecei a lidar mais com o inglês do que o português. Mas nunca esqueci as minhas raízes açoreanas, da ilha de São Miguel, apesar de viver estes longos anos fora da terra materna. Hoje tenho 62 anos! Imagina o tempo que já se passou!
Mais uma vez, muito obrigado pela sua leitura do meu texto, mesmo com a ajuda do tradutor. Todos nós precisamos de tradução de vez em quando.

Aqui no Brasil, nós também gostamos de misturar inglês com português, ou melhor, português com inglês. Mas o contexto e a motivação são diferentes, já você o faz por motivos literários e culturais pelo que entendi.
Aqui no Brasil é mais por causa do “imperialismo americano”, mas não digo isso por crítica amarga; na verdade, admiro os americanos e a sua cultura.
My English is terrible. But maybe once I might try to write a comment more simple without the help of a sowftware of translation.

Sem querer fugir muito do assunto, eu acho que os brasileiros estão criando uma nova língua. Pelo menos, isso não é uma opinião muito difícil de encontrar dentro dos ambientes escolares e universitários. De certa, forma sinto pena por isso, pois o português é uma língua especial, assim como também o inglês o é. 😀

I’m also happy to have found your blog, because it is very interesting. It has a visition of the world as you a speaker of Portuguese and English. Besides that, I like to talk with Portuguese people.
