First Snowfall

We had our first November snowfall in Toronto. A record-setting 19.4 cm on Sunday. It’s time to hibernate.

What a difference a few weeks makes.

Yes, Emanuel, I felt as if I emigrated to a different country, and I already miss the old one.

I’ve never experienced snow in my life. I live in a tropical country and I wish to experience it first in Japan.

Having grown up in the San Francisco Bay Area flatlands, I never experienced snowfall until I was 21 and meeting John’s family in the Midwest for the first time over the holidays. I ran outdoors as the snow began, expecting to commune with a glorious natural sensation. But instead it felt as though tiny razor blades were slicing my face, so I ran right back indoors, disillusioned and cold.

After moving back east, snow became an adult chore (something to have to shovel) and often an obstacle to commuting. Then there’s the inconvenience of when snow or sleet brings down power lines, leaving us stuck in a cold house without electricity for hours (or days).

I still find snow to be highly overrated. Harrumph!

I am so sorry that your experience of snow was so negative. Hopefully you can enjoy my photographs of snow from the warmth of your home and maybe that will help you think of snow differently now.

      Hi Caroline,
The first time I saw snow was when I came to Canada. It was the month of February, one of the coldest in Toronto, but I fell in love with the magic of snow and still enjoy it. Although I like to see it more now from the warmth of home rather than be outside in the cold. Enjoy your warmth. Emanuel
